A Look into the Different Types of Mattress Overlays

Mattress overlays, also known as mattress toppers, are used when you need to change the performance of your regular mattress. Some toppers are designed to change the thermal qualities of a mattress whereas others may be designed to make a difference in its softness or even its contourability. There are several different types of mattress overlays, each of which has its own distinct benefits and downsides. Which one you choose would depend upon your own personal preference as well as the purpose that you need it for.

At Mobility Specialists, we believe that a good night’s sleep is crucial for overall good health. Nobody should have to compromise on comfort when sleeping. Our experts are well versed as to the features of the different types of mattress overlays and would be happy to help you make the right choice. Call us today for a good night’s sleep.

Here we list the different types of mattress overlays and the salient features of each type:

Mattress Memory Foam Overlay

Mattress OverlayIn memory foam overlays, the surface can be smooth or perforated. These foam toppers offer superior contourability, which helps reduce pressure points and the likelihood of developing pressure sores. They are also very warm, which is a plus if you are looking for extra warmth but may be a tad too uncomfortable for someone who does not like to be too warm while sleeping. These foam toppers may not be the ideal choice for anyone needing spinal alignment as they are not resilient enough.

Resilient Foam Overlays

These polyurethane or latex foam overlays are usually designed with egg-crate patterned perforations that enhance ventilation and improve its breathability. This eggcrate pattern allows even pressure distribution, reduces pressure points and also prevents buildup of heat and moisture by encourages air circulation through the convoluted surface.  Mattress foam made of superior quality latex works better than a polyurethane mattress topper when it comes to reducing pressure points.
These toppers help you sleep warmer, which could be good or bad depending on your preference.

Air Floatation Mattress Toppers

Air floatation toppers could be either vinyl mattress overlays or those made of inflatable rubber. They offer excellent contourability and superior body alignment, which help to reduce pressure points considerably. For optimum postural control, these should be inflated only partially. This is ideal for someone who prefers to be cool while sleeping. The only downside is that they can be difficult and sometimes impossible to repair if the seams leak or if they get punctured.

Water Floatation Mattress Toppers

These toppers can be made of water filled vinyl or rubber. They offer excellent contourability and superior body alignment, which help to reduce pressure points considerably. The major problem with these is that they are impossible to repair if there is a puncture or if the seams leak.
