Mobility equipment provides those who otherwise could not get around a chance to experience freedom again. Medicare recognizes the need for this equipment and they will cover a portion of the cost of medically necessary mobility equipment. The key to reimbursement is Medicare B coverage.
What Is Medicare Part B?
Medicare Part B is the part of Medicare medical insurance that covers Durable Medical Equipment, otherwise known as DME. It requires a monthly payment for the premium and it covers items such as mobility equipment.
In order for Medicare Part B to cover your mobility equipment, two conditions must be met. First, it must be reasonable and necessary for the treatment of an illness or injury. Secondly, it must be used in the patient’s home. As long as these two criteria are met to Medicare’s specifications, they will pay 80% of the cost. In many cases, your own private insurance may cover mobility equipment, as well.
How Is Billing Handled?
At Mobility Specialists, we file your claim for you, whether it is through Medicare insurance or private insurance. Our Medicare Billing Specialists will speak with you to determine a level of initial eligibility. You will need to have a form completed by your doctor indicating the need for mobility equipment. Once we receive this, we’ll take care of the medical billing and coding and the medical claims to Medicare.
If your claim is denied, we will work with you so you are able to resubmit the claim again. Most claims are paid rather quickly. If you do not have another type of insurance, then you may be responsible for the other 20% of the cost not covered by Medicare. However, we can work with you on that balance to find affordable payment solutions.
The Types of Equipment that Is Covered
Depending on your medical needs, Medicare will cover a wide range of mobility equipment, including wheelchairs, power wheelchairs, mobility chairs, and chair lifts. It all will depend on your doctor’s recommendation and what is considered “reasonable” by Medicare. There is a lot of Medicare fraud, unfortunately, so they must do what they can to make sure people who need the assistance do receive it.
